Content is King

Frequent changes

Content is probably the biggest driving force to high ranking. It is paramount to have a descent amount of quality content. It’s obvious that users love fresh content, but search engines do as well. So a little trick to apply when you don’t have a webpage that has frequent updates is to search for rss feeds matching your keywords. You can show these feeds on your website, so you’ll content will stay fresh and regularly updated! Generally, when a site is frequently updated, this increases the probability that the spider will revisit the site sooner.

Watch out though, it’s more important to have relevant content than to have a lot of fresh content that isn’t relevant at all. Especially when you are optimizing a company website, you don’t want to add links to competition.

Good example: the-lingerie-post.com, updated daily with relevant, fresh and unique content. A great example!

Bad example: solar-powered-cars.net, loads of content, but some of it isn’t unique, and it hasn’t been updated since 2009. A disgrace!

Bold & italic

Now that you have created quality content it’s important that you make you’re keywords stand out from the crowd. This is not only important for search engines but humans as well. It’s easier to read a text that have some words in bold and italic. As you already know headings are important, and search engines are able to interpret these. The same goes for bold and italic words. You can use them to emphasize a word or a noun phrase. Of course it’s not a good idea to have almost every word in bold or italic, this will spoil the effect.

An example:

Content is probably the biggest driving force to high ranking. It is paramount to have a descent amount of quality content. It’s obvious that users love fresh content, but search engines do as well.

Duplicate

Make sure your content is not a duplicate. If it’s stolen, this will get you in trouble, it might not be illegal but search engines don’t like this. So make sure that when you obtain an article (there’s a lot of article databases, free and paid, on the web) that you alter the text so it’s not an exact duplicate.

This didn’t use to be a problem but when some webmasters started making multiple copies of the same page under different names to have more hits in search engines, the search engines countered by ignoring duplicate content.
